Core
skill RF
design - primarily RF power amplifier and receiver front-end, with some
synthesiser and RF filter experience.
Having seen so many products where the electrical performance
has been limited by poor pcb layout design, I always include the lay-out as part of my work..…
Summary
Thirty years continuous experience in the design and development
of HF, VHF/UHF and microwave radio circuitry, usually as part of a
small development team. I prefer taking a product from concept right
through to production and beyond where possible, and most of my
previous work has reflected this. I tend to be 'hands on' and
approachable, and am still driven by my basic enthusiasm for radio
engineering.
Eastern
analog and rf Ltd (1999 - ) My own company, set
up after taking redundancy from Simoco. Work is two thirds consultancy
- Occasional Artevea
visits to resolve RF issues on their Tetra Base terminals
- Occasional Eltek visits
to resolve RF issues on their wireless data-loggers
- 2 months
characterisation testing of development UWB chip at Artimi
- Design of DRM MW
transmitters to replace the current low power AM variants that my
company sells in small quantities.
- 18
months GIS
Ltd. Hardware design and software-liason of a discrete 2.4 GHz RFID
reader following major short-comings of the initial development chip-set
- 6 months Pi research,
resolving poor spurious performance of their 3 /4.5GHz motorcar
data/speech link
- 6 months Pi research,
synth redesign on 800MHz tyre pressure transmitter, to improve
microphony performance
- 1 month Simoco
propagation dept, quantifying Tetra base station transmit intermod
issues.
- 3 months Simoco
propagation dept, quantifying Tetra receive interference and multipath
propagation problems/issues
- Occasional Simoco
visits to resolve issues on the PRF10 FM Base station. Also provide
talks for the training school on this product
- I design/manufacture
and supply medium wave transmitters and antennas for low power
Hospital/Student radio systems.
- Rebanded the PRF10 Tx
for 300MHz for MOD customer SERCO. Then had to redesigned synth loop,
and add mod symmetry cct!
- Design of assorted 860
MHz RF amps up to 30W and masthead pre-amps for same
- Hardware
design/software liason of RDS encoder
- Additionally, I have
produced low noise front ends for Radio Astronomy, including front-ends
at 408/1420MHz for the 18m ‘one mile array’ dishes at the Mullard
observatory, and low cost 11GHz interferometry schemes using modified
satellite tv LNBs and dishes. I monitor propagation at 10 GHz,
producing the equipment to do this, including PA's up to 4W. With a
colleague, give talks/demonstrations on things such as radio
astronomy/seti/tesla coils. Designed and built the Cambridge 10 GHz
beacon.
I have an extensive range of Test
equipment, and also share pcb production equipment, and via Easy-PC can
produce immediate development boards on material from FR4 to RF-35/RO
4003 microwave dielectric.
Simoco Europe Ltd (formerly
Philips/Pye Telecom) unless otherwise
stated (1979 /1999)
- TETRA Base
station Tx (1999). Produced design study for high efficiency
linear transmitter power amplifier
- MAP VHF/UHF
mobile transceiver (1997-1998) Designed the transmitter power
amplifier, antenna filter and PIN diode antenna switching circuit for
all bands 68-512MHz. of this SRP8000 portable derived product.
Controlled the internal mechanical layout and was responsible for the
overall pcb layout of all RF areas.
- PRF10 series
VHF/UHF FM Base Station (1992-1999) One of 4 person electrical
design team. Also laid down and controlled the mechanical concept.
Product uses boards from an existing high volume mobile design. Was
responsible for the design of the unique RF boards required for duplex
operation (Tx VCO, isolator, Rx antenna filter) plus the SMPSU
regulator and overall PSU concept. Duplexers are bought-in items, so
responsible for their use, but not design. From 1995/1999 continued to
look after and develop the product onward on my own. This period covers
the design of:
- 50W power amp variant.
- PIN diode control of
integrated duplexer/simplex variant (for MOD)
- Band II wideband FM
broadcast audio quality transmitter only variant for 25W RSL use
- Various band wideband
FM broadcast/talkback link variants for commercial radio outside
broadcast use
- Quasi-sync variant (ie
design of Hi stability PLL board and general purpose interface
framework)
- Trunking protocol
community repeater variant (but using existing trunking control boards)
- Various minor options
boards (DTMF controlled RFW, Rx call tone, RSSI conversion, telephone
controller interface)
- FX5000 and FR5000
VHF/UHF FM Base stations (1988-1992) Designed the Tx power
amplifier modules and UHF synthesisereceiver module. Designed the
isolator ancillary.
- MX295 Band III
mobile (1987-1988) Rebanded the transmitter power amplifier to
225MHz.
- F490 series
VHF/UHF AM and FM series Base Station (1984-1988) Included the
design of a VHF 25W AM Tx PA pcb.
- SSB200 100W HF
ssb transceiver (1979-1984) Designed the Tx PA, and the
switched antenna filters. Produced a teleradio unit
Racal Telecom Ltd
(1975-1979)
Development of valve
500W HF power amplifier, its solid state driver and 1kW ATU product
Bolton Institute
of Technology (1972 – 1975) Obtained BSc in electronics and
communication engineering
